Benchmark

This weekend was mainly rain and clouds, but I did get out in my kayak on Saturday morning. On Sunday, I tackled an extra credit assignment for my geology class: find a particular benchmark and have my picture taken in front of it. My research assistant joined me. The six month old assistant was there, too, but asleep. What a slacker! I will have to give her equal photo time sometime soon. I'd also like to get some nice rhododendron blossoms photographed and posted soon.

Past and Future

A rerun from last May. I'm hoping to make it up to Lake Conasauga this month, but I think the roads are going to be too muddy this weekend. I'm going to go paddling around Lake Ocoee instead (if the weather holds up tomorrow morning). Last weekend I paddled on the Tennessee but spent most of the time getting rained on. You wouldn't want to be in a kayak on the Tennessee this weekend (the river is up). Well, OK, some people would.

Border Zone

This is a scene from a route I like to bike. Along the route, there's this interesting little spot at the Tennessee-Georgia border where two rural roads don't quite match up (presumably due to property lines). Each road is a smooth two lane road, but then there's a 100 meter long one lane bumpy pothole-filled connector which runs right on the border line. The connector is a sharp 90 turn from each side, and the county line signs are placed at each end, one facing south, the other facing north. These two photos are from the corner where you enter Georgia. 100 meters down the connector below is a hard right turn and the Tennessee (Bradley County) sign.

That was spring, earlier this month in Georgia.
