Friday Rock Blogging

No mere computer failure can stop Friday Rock Blogging! Although this isn't the best photo. It's hard for me to really pick out and work on the best photos while I am restricted to this old 13-in CRT monitor.
I believe the above is a mica schist. Taken from some torn up land on the edge of a strip mall in Northern Virginia. As an example of how broad a category "schist" can be, compare this with the schist featured from my childhood Georgia stomping grounds.

Of course, it's possible that I misclassified the Georgia rock, but I don't think so. For comparison, here's a photo from that August 18th post:

Movie

I'm currently operating off my database machine, with the memories of my old laptop transferred on to a USB-attached hard drive. A new ThinkPad is on its way. That's my excuse for not posting a photo of my own today. Instead check out these movie set photos that a neighbor took. Tarantino shot some scenes about a mile or two from here, older Burnet Road businesses in general being popular. Directors better get their shots in soon before all the great places are replaced with overpriced California-style places. Dare I mention the "cafeteria" that is anything but?

Note the Chevy Novas. I still think of my college friend from Jackson, TN when I see one. For the record his Nova was green, not gray.

Brain Drain

"Mind your own business, Mr. Spock. I'm sick of your half-breed interference! Do you hear?"
(It was the first thing that came to mind while looking at this scene)

Technical Difficulties

My longtime partner in technology (an aging five year old IBM ThinkPad) overheated today. He needs some rest, possibly retirement. There may not be posting for a day or two until he's either feeling better, or has had his memories transferred elsewhere. Here's hoping that when I find an ATA-to-USB enclosure and hook the hard drive up that it is still working (I think it's something else overheating that is the root of the laptop's unconciousness).

In case you're wondering, this post was written on a tower used mainly for running databases. It only has an old 1024x768 13in monitor attached and is quite immobile.

Cat In A Box

Yes, I didn't have a chance to go anywhere nice and outdoorsy this weekend.

Growing Season #2

When these bulb-based guys start coming up, you know the dry season is hopefully over and the second growing season has begun.

Not This Weekend

A photo of the main Zilker Park concert stage, taken a while ago (from the Zilker Zephyr). I think it's safe to say that it's a lot more crowded there right now. I'm not going to any of the ACL fest. I really wanted to, but the ticket prices were steep, sold out fast, and there's no way I'd be able to enjoy enough of even a 1-day pass with various other duties taking up time.
I really would have liked to see Tom Petty and Massive Attack, among others. Oh well. I guess I did see Tom Petty the last two times he was in town (although he did skip Austin on his last tour).

A photo of my daughter during the Florida trip. Posted just because.
